Here are some tips how to store potatoes, so that you may extend its shelf life maintaining its quality.
Store Potatoes at a cool and dark corner.
Store these at 7 – 100 If not possible find out the coolest corner of your house to store them.
Moisture is a No No:
Potatoes should be stored in a dry place. Moisture makes them rot. This is the reason why you should avoid storing them in a plastic bag. Plastic bags hold the moisture and let the potatoes perish.
Don’t refrigerate potatoes:
Refrigeration converts the starch present in a potato into sugar quickly, resulting a change in their taste and texture. Storing it at a cool pantry or cellar is sufficient.
Don’t clean them:
Potatoes should be stored unwashed. The moisture will encourage spoilage quickly. You need to wash them only when they are in use.
Avoid Onions:
Onions are prone to release gas which affects potatoes quickly. Keep it in mind. You should always store potatoes and onion separately.
Always keep an inspection:
If you see any signs of sprouting, or soft spots, or rot or dry may be, just remove the damaged potato from the storage area. The spread of spoilage can be avoided like this.
Use proper container:
If you need to store it in a container, be sure it allows air circulation. A basket, a mesh bag or a paper bag can keep these fresh.
Store them away from other veggies:
Avoid storing potatoes near strong smelling food crops like onion or garlic, as potatoes are prone to absorb the odors.
