How to make Coconut Yogurt Starter?

Making homemade vegan yogurt is super easy. All you need is a small amount of starter to set a large bowl of yogurt. Now the million-dollar question is, where you will get that tiny scoop of the starter if there was no readymade yogurt in your kitchen? The answer is simple. You have to make it on your own. Because buying a full can of yogurt from a grocery shop to scoop out a spoonful of starter is NOT an option. We have to come up with our very own vegan yogurt starter. Simple.

Now, let me tell you how you can do it. It’s super easy and an okay-tasting method for ages. Let’s see how.

Ingredients:

Coconut milk – ½ Cup

Green chilies – 2 Nos. (with the stalks)

Procedure:

Take thick homemade coconut milk (the first batch of milk produced during the preparation of coconut milk) and bring it to the boiling point. As soon it reaches the boiling point, turn off the flame.

Now transfer it to a glass bowl. Bring it to room temperature.

Now add two green chilies (slit slightly from the top before you use it) along with its stalks (separated from the chilies).

Keep it at a hot place, preferably in the kitchen.

Let it set for around 24 hours.

Your coconut yogurt starter will be ready within this time. You may use it for making coconut yogurt or use it as a vegan yogurt starter for any other vegan yogurt preparation.

Conclusion:

Chili stalks are a good source of fermentation-inducing bacteria which turns milk into a thick layer of yogurt. It has been in use for ages to prepare the starter. Now it’s your turn to continue the tradition.
