I was feeling like something to bake today. I needed to make something to munch as an afternoon snack. So I combined my urge for baking and the necessity of preparing an afternoon snack together. And, what do I get? Churros. Confused? Actually, I omitted the frying part from the churro recipe and opted for the baking instead. It came out so good. You know what, it is an amazing dish to savor and so is its history.
There are many different stories you get to read about the birth of this widely loved dish. Some say it was China who made the first churro, though the name was different, YouTiao. And then with the Portuguese sailors, this was brought to Europe. Initially, it was a salty flour stick when it was only a part of Chinese cuisine, but as it sailed to Europe it became sweet and entered the dessert section of the European cuisine. My favorite story is the other one. It is said that it was the nomadic Spanish shepherds who made the churros. They used to live in the high mountains where pastry shops were not within the horizon. They invented the churros to satiate their sweet cravings. They named it after their favorite breed of sheep, Navajo-Churro as it reminded them of their horns.
Let’s see how you too can prepare this in your kitchen.
