Ginger spices up your food; isn’t it? But storing it without losing its natural temper is a task. If you’re wondering how to store ginger, let me tell you my fried, here are some tips you may try to keep your ginger fresh for a longer while.
Choose the right ginger:
This is the first step. Select the best one from the market. How do you know which is the best? Well, see its texture. Go for a firm, smooth and wrinkle free or mold free one.
Store at a room temperature:
If you are planning to use your ginger within a week time, you may store it at a room temperature. You should find out the coolest and driest corner of the house away from direct sunlight.
Store in a fridge:
If you need to store it for up to 2 – 3 weeks, put the ginger in a re-sealable plastic bag and store it in the vegetable box.
Store in the freezer:
If you are wondering how to store ginger for a quite longer time extending its shelf life, freeze it. Here are some tips.
Freeze the whole of it: Wrap the whole ginger with a plastic in a tight grip. Place it in the freezer.
Freeze the ginger paste: Peel off the ginger and grate it into fine texture. Place it inside an ice cube tray. Freeze it. Once frozen transfer the ginger ice cubes to a freezer box so that you may take it out whenever needed.
Freeze sliced /chopped ginger: Peel off the ginger and slice it. Spread it on a baking tray and freeze it until these turn solid. Transfer them to a freezer box so that you may take it out whenever needed.
Store in water:
This is my favorite. I generally don’t store ginger more than 10 days. So if you are thinking how to store ginger for such a moderately long time, storing it in water is the best option I believe. But make sure you will not keep these for a prolonged time, as storing these in water might attract mold. Here what you should do.
Peel off: Peel off the ginger with vegetable peeler or a sharp spoon.
Cut off: Cut the whole chunk into small pieces.
Treat water: Boil a jarful of water and bring it back to the normal temperature.
Store: Store the ginger pieces in the water and tightly lid the jar.
Inspect: Keep an eye on it. If you see the colour of water is getting changed or may be turning into an opaque transparency, just change water.
