Let’s understand why we need sea salt, when we have our regular table salt. Let’s understand the difference first. Table salt is refined; sea salt is natural. Table salt is fine; sea salt is coarse. Table salt’s usage is restricted to cooking, where sea salt has a quite large arena to perform in the kitchen. Be it seasoning, or giving finishing touch to any delicacy, or being the base for an oven during baking, or brining and being used as a preservative, sea salt is indispensable. And so is for making a salt crust over a whole fish. The sea salt comes in various types based on its granule size. Let’s see how to store sea salt in our regular kitchen so that it might not catch moisture, become lumpy or release water.
Choose the right kind of container:
Take a glass or ceramic container. Why glass or ceramic? Because these are non-reactors to many ingredients, and salt is amongst them. Make sure the container is airtight.
Keep it dry:
It’s your main and only task. Moisture can make sea salt lumpy. Make sure the container is completely dry before storing the salt. Keep it in a cool and dry place away from humidity.
Don’t store in the Sun:
Direct sunlight is a big ‘No No’. UV ray present in sunbeams can change the quality of sea salt.
Use Silica Gel packs:
Let’s say you stay in an extremely humid area and you can hardly find out a lesser humid corner at your home, I would suggest opt for Silica gel packs to store your sea salt. These will absorb the extra humidity and keep the sea salt free flowing.
Keep the scoops dry and clear:
Never dip a wet spoon or utensil to bring out salt from the container. It will transmit the water particle to the salt and all your efforts would go for a toss.
Store in a cool place:
The more it is hot, the more it is humid. So, you better store the sea salt in a cool place, preferably in a comparatively cool pantry or a cupboard away from stoves or ovens.
Conclusion:
Hope now you know how to store sea salt in your regular kitchen. With a regular inspection, you are able to keep its free-flow intact and for a longer period of time.
