New-age kitchens are quite free from the sugar business, but I am quite old school. I can’t imagine my kitchen without sugar. I know there are multiple options available that can add sweetness to my dishes. But, you know what, I can’t gel with that concept; at least not for the regular days. For any other normal day, I trust my same old normal sugar. So, my natural concern is how to store sugar so that it stays moisture and pests-free. Actually, these two are the only points of concern when you are storing it.
I generally take these steps to store the sugar.
Let’s see how you too can store it:
Keep it Moisture-free:
Always keep it dry and cool place to maintain its free flow. Moisture tends to release water making the sugar wet. It’s quite messy.
Keep a piece of blotting paper inside the container if it is rainy season. The humidity would be higher this time. The blotting paper would absorb the moisture keeping it dry.
Keep it pests-free:
The trickiest part is to store sugar avoiding the eyes of the tiny pests. Ants have a general tendency to figure out where are the sweets. To avoid their grasp, always put a fistful of cloves inside the Sugar container. These will never allow ants to climb up.
Freezing can be done too:
If you have to store Sugar in a larger quantity, you may opt for freezing it in the freezer. Just take an air-tight container, so that no moisture can break into the container and it may stay fresh for a longer time.
Handle with care:
Always use dry spoons to scoop out the sugar from the container avoiding the chances of introducing moisture. Store them in a sealed container so that no moisture or pests catch them easily.
Inspection is the key:
Regular inspection is a must if you are focusing on how to store sugar in your regular kitchen corner. Keep a good eye on it. If you find moisture or any trace of pests, just spread it on paper and let it be naturally dry, or let the pests go away. And, then you restore it. To get rid of the pests, you know the trick. Use a fistful of clove to drive these away.
Conclusion:
I hope now you know how to store sugar properly so that it doesn’t get spoiled. I generally store Sugar in the coolest corner of my kitchen to avoid heat. Heat may release water too, so it’s better if you avoid it.
